The Taiwan Climate Action Network (TCAN) has evaluated the climate policies of presidential candidates ahead of the upcoming elections. The evaluation is based on official election websites, political opinion presentations, debates, and comments in media interviews.

The network noted the 2030 carbon reduction targets of the three candidates. DPP&39;s Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) proposes 30%, and TPP’s Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) aims for 40%. However, it raised concerns regarding the feasibility of Ko’s plan to achieve his reduction target.

Regarding carbon pricing, the network says that Lai and Hou have advocated for a carbon tax, but only Ko has made a clear commitment to promoting carbon tax in the future. However, it says all candidates lack comprehensive medium to long-term plans.

TCAN Research Director Chao Chia-wei (趙家緯) noted that candidates have overlooked that over half of Taiwan's emissions come from the industrial sector. Chao says that despite pledging net-zero, none of the candidates have proposed concrete policies to deal with industrial emissions which he says will make it challenging to achieve 2030 targets.
