The first batch of 30 German students intended for TSMC internships will begin their four-month studies at National Taiwan University (NTU) starting early March. In a press conference at the German Trade Office (GTO) Economic Outlook event on Thursday, Saxon Science Taiwan Office Liaison Officer Josef Goldberger confirmed that some of the recruits have already arrived in Taiwan.
TSMC announced in August 2023 that plans to jointly invest in the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) in Dresden, Germany, has been approved by the Economic Ministry. According to the company, the Dresden fab is set to produce 12-inch wafers using 16/28nm process technologies and construction will begin in the second half of 2024 with production starting late 2027.
To cultivate semiconductor talents, the German Saxony State Government, the Technische Universität (TU) Dresden, and TSMC are cooperating on a training program agreement which will send 100 students to Taiwan every year to study and receive TSMC factory training.
Goldberger said that 9 students arrived in Taiwan last week, elaborating that since German universities are currently holding final exams, the remaining 21 will join the program in early March. He explained that the first batch will be taking NTU courses for four months before beginning TSMC's training. The second round, Goldberger added, will include students from a larger number of schools, expanding talent cultivation potential.
