A Hong Kong government official has said that there is currently no official communication between Hong Kong and Taiwan, and there is no plan to restore it. Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang (曾國衞) made the comments while responding to questions in the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

The Hong Kong representative office in Taiwan, known as the Hong Kong Economic, Trade, and Cultural office, has been closed since May 18, 2021. It ceased operations suddenly with no explanation. In Tsang’s comments, he said that the office closure was due to a “series of actions” taken by Taiwan which damaged Taiwan-Hong Kong relations. He did not elaborate on which actions caused the closure.

In June 2021, Taiwan pulled all but one of its staff members from its representative office in Hong Kong. Taiwan claimed that visas for their staff were being withheld unless they signed a document committing themselves to the “one China” principle. The principal includes the claim that Taiwan is a part of China.

While Tsang said operations would not resume, he said Taiwanese people are welcome to travel to Hong Kong.
