Both Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) candidate Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) have conceded defeat in the 2024 presidential election. At around 8 p.m., both Ko and Hou appeared at their respective camps to address their supporters.

Ko thanked his supporters and asked everyone not to give up, saying that Taiwan needs other voices aside from those of the blue and green camps. He said it was a sad night, but that he will not give up because of the setback and has taken the first step towards success.

Hou’s supporters cheered and waved national flags at the KMT camp. Hou bowed to the crowd of supporters and apologized for disappointing everyone by not being able to secure the presidency. Hou also congratulated Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on his victory.

Lai’s victory gives the DPP its third consecutive term in office.
