All seven grand justice nominees have been rejected by the Legislature on Friday, marking the second time President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) picks have been denied. The voting outcome continues delays in the Constitutional Court, which is unable to rule on any cases after opposition lawmakers adopted measures requiring 10 justices for adjudication last December.

In response to the outcome, the KMT and TPP caucuses both advocated that this wave of candidates did not meet their standards. Five of Lai’s picks, including veteran prosecutor Tsai Chiu-ming (蔡秋明) and Supreme Court judge Su Su-e (蘇素娥), who were nominated to serve as president and vice president of the Judiciary, were rejected only by KMT and TPP legislators.

Some DPP lawmakers joined the opposition in denying nominees Chen Tsi-yang (陳慈陽) and Chan Chen-jung (詹鎮榮), both legal scholars, even though DPP Caucus Secretary-General Rosalia Wu (吳思瑤) said her party would support all of Lai's candidates.

No nominee was able to secure more than 57 votes, the threshold for approval. According to the results, nominees Tsai, Su, Supreme Court Judge Zheng Chun-hui (鄭純惠), Head Prosecutor of the Taiwan High Prosecutors' Office Lin Li-ying (林麗瑩), and law professor Hsiao Wen-sheng (蕭文生) all received 51 votes in favor and 59 against. Chen received 26 in favor, 82 against, and 2 invalid votes, and Chan received 26 in favor, 81 against, and 3 invalid votes.
