United States President Donald Trump assigned Taiwan a 20% tariff rate via executive order early Friday morning. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced via Facebook that this was only a temporary rate as Taiwan-US negotiations are still ongoing. A press conference is scheduled for 11:30 am for further updates.

The president underlines that Taiwan's negotiation team in Washington was informed of a 20% “tariff rate”, which could be lowered if an agreement is reached. Lai thanked the team for their continuous hard work, and for maintaining Taiwan's four priorities of food security, safeguarding national security, protecting industrial interests, and public health.

President Lai noted that the team will continue to work for the best deal for Taiwan. He said more information responding to the announced tariff policy would be provided at a press conference today at 11:30 am
