The Sports Ministry, to be established this September, will have an annual budget of NT$20 billion (US$657 million). This Thursday, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced that the budget would be approved by the Cabinet later that day.
Lai praised Taiwanese athletes’ achievements at the World Games in Chengdu this year. The games, which concluded on Sunday, saw Taiwan take home five gold, six silver, and four bronze medals. The president noted the women’s tug-of-war team earning its sixth consecutive gold medal and the powerlifter Yang Sen (楊森) breaking the world record with his gold medal win as competition highlights.
The president thanked all the athletes, saying they have inspired and encouraged Taiwan regardless of whether or not they medaled. Lai also expressed gratitude to the coaches, trainers, and logistical and support staff.
Lai quizzed the athletes on when the Sports Ministry would be established, to which they quickly responded, “September 9.” He continued to detail the ministry's three key goals: promoting sports for all, helping aspiring athletes achieve success, and enabling athletes to leverage their experience post-retirement. The new ministry is for all of the athletes and the country, according to Lai.
