President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) visited Hualien again this past weekend to issue four directives in the wake of the Fata’an River disaster and demand that the search for the remaining six missing persons continue.

The Cabinet Minister Without Portfolio and chief coordinator of the Central Emergency Operation Center (CEOC) disaster relief effort Chi Lien-cheng (季連成) reported on the latest developments. According to Chi, schools in the area are gradually resuming classes, with schools that can reopen in person doing so first while schools providing resettlement services or contending with significant structural damage will instead prioritize online classes. Road desilting is nearly complete, he said, although a great deal of sand and mud still needs clearing from farmland.

The president said that until the landslide lake issue can be completely resolved, river water levels, the construction of temporary levees, desilting, and the implementation of evacuation plans should take priority. He also stressed that every effort should be made to locate the last remaining missing persons.
