Four batches of eggs totaling 150,000 eggs that were contaminated with three times the permissible level of the pesticide fipronil-sulfone were taken off the shelves this weekend. Agriculture Minister Chen Junne-jih (陳駿季) said Tuesday that they expect to wrap up their investigation into how the eggs were contaminated within the next two days.
The eggs were produced by a livestock farm in Changhua County and had been distributed to nine counties and cities before being recalled for containing 0.03 parts per million (ppm) of the pesticide. Per Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration, any eggs with the traceability code 147045 should not be consumed.
Chen said they suspect the contamination originated either from feed or from environmental pollution. He added that the incident appears to be an isolated case, pointing out that since fipronil-sulfone is an insecticide and that there are farmlands next to the chicken coop.
Regarding Typhoon Fung-Wong, which is expected to bring heavy rains to Taiwan through Wednesday and Thursday, Chen said that with the exception of green onions from Yilan, vegetable prices are not expected to fluctuate significantly.
