Recent concerns over China’s naval activity have led the Taiwan military to reorganize for better combat capability by combining the prowess of Taiwan’s top forces.
Quickly subduing enemy forces is the goal of the 101st Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion, otherwise known as the Sea Dragon Frogmen. The Airborne Special Service Company, also called the Liangshan Mountain Ghosts, is also recognized for its full camouflage uniforms and stealth infiltration abilities.
The Sea Dragon Frogmen and Liangshan Mountain Ghosts are among the most effective special forces units in Taiwan’s Armed Forces. In October, they were both transferred to Aviation and Special Forces Command, and will be merged into a single cohesive unit beginning New Year's Day 2026.
Global Defense Magazine Interviews Director Chen Kuo-ming (陳國銘) said that Taiwan's coastline cannot be easily defended by either the navy or the army alone, so it is necessary to merge the expertise of these two units. He detailed that after the merger, the new combined unit's combat power may not necessarily increase significantly. He raised the question of how they can maximize their effectiveness in coastal operations, especially with mounting pressures in the region.
However, the Aviation and Special Forces Command assures that it will utilize full combat drills to best hone the Sea Dragon Frogmen and Liangshan Mountain Ghosts to the best of their potential.
