As the Lunar New Year approaches and many people plan overseas trips and social gatherings, the annual flu season is nearing its peak. This Tuesday, physicians advised those aged 65 and older to get their influenza shot to reduce the risk of infection and severe illness.

Influenza cases in the United States surged sharply at the end of 2025; in Japan, flu cases are declining but remain high. The flu outbreak in Taiwan is expected to peak right around the holiday season.

Physician and Chairman of the Taiwan Association of Clinical Diabetes Samuel Chen (陳宏麟) said that nearly 90% of Taiwan’s senior citizen population suffers from at least one chronic disease. For these individuals, catching the flu can be especially dangerous. He strongly recommends paying out of pocket for the adjuvanted vaccine, which further enhances protection.

Chen also reminded the public that the vaccine takes at least two weeks and up to four weeks to take effect.
