Taiwan’s completion rates for primary and secondary education were higher than the world average, according to the Education Ministry’s analysis of the recently released “UN Sustainable Development Goals — Education Statistical Indicators.” The February 1 report statistics also show Taiwan outperforming global averages across multiple categories in UN education indicators.
As of 2021, Taiwan’s elementary school completion rate was 99.98%, compared with the global average of 87.1%, and its junior high school completion rate was 99.75%, against the world average of 76.8%. Most notably, the country’s senior high school completion rate was 98.81%, compared with a global average of 57.9%.
Ministry data showed that in 2023, the gross enrollment rate in higher education was 90.3%, higher than the world average of 43.2% and the East Asian average of 74.03%.
Regarding the percentage of students more than two years older than school age, the ministry stated that in 2023, Taiwan's elementary school student over-age rate was 0.01%, lower than the world average of 10.06%, and the junior high school student over-age rate was 0.04%, also substantially lower than the world average of 9.40%.
The Education Ministry pointed out that the participation rate in organized learning in the year before elementary school, since Taiwanese people generally send their five-year-old children to kindergarten, performed at 95.09% in 2023, higher than the world average of 75.11%.
