The Foreign Ministry (MOFA) on Friday welcomed a European Parliament report urging the EU to deepen security and defense cooperation with Taiwan amid concerns over China’s challenges to European and Indo-Pacific security.
The full European Parliament on Wednesday approved the REPORT on EU strategic defence and security partnerships (2025/2119), drafted by the Committee on Security and Defence to advance EU security and defense partnerships, the ministry said.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) expressed sincere appreciation and support. The ministry thanked the parliament’s concrete actions backing deepened Taiwan-EU security and defense cooperation. It pledged to continue supporting Taiwan-Europe security exchanges and defense industry collaboration to safeguard a rules-based international order and address emerging threats.
The report highlighted EU vulnerabilities from overreliance on China for critical raw materials, citing China’s support for Russia’s wartime economy. It urged the EU to reassess economic ties with China via de-risking measures to bolster resilience and counter China’s role as a key enabler and supporter of Russia’s aggression.
MOFA spokesperson Hsiao Kwang-wei (蕭光偉) said, “In the future, our country will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with like-minded countries such as the EU in relevant fields, jointly responding to current security challenges and promoting regional peace and global stability.”
