The first day of the Lunar New Year sees cooler weather throughout the country, with lower temperatures persisting for the rest of the week as the northeast monsoon moves out.
According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), brief localized showers are expected north of Taoyuan as well as in Yilan and Hualien. Sporadic rain is also possible in the Hsinchu-Miaoli area, Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Central and southern Taiwan will see mostly cloudy to sunny skies, though it will still feel cool in the early morning and evening.
On the second day of the New Year, moisture levels will decrease slightly. Rain is expected along the Keelung north coast, Greater Taipei, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Areas south of Taoyuan will be mostly cloudy to sunny.
The CWA expects the northeast monsoon to gradually weaken starting Thursday, with temperatures in northern and northeastern Taiwan rising slightly. By the end of the week, it will be mostly clear throughout the country.
The CWA additionally reports that the dense fog that caused a temporary suspension of flights at Matsu’s Nangan and Beigan airports has improved significantly. However, transportation may be disrupted once again by low clouds and fog this Sunday.
