The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Ten AI Initiatives Promotion Plan “high-speed quantum computing national strategy launch conference” was held Friday, March 6. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) attended, noting that Taiwan’s technology has moved into the practical application stage, allowing it to ride this new wave of technical innovation. 

As the government continues its Ten AI Initiatives Promotion Plan, high-speed quantum computing remains key. Taiwan can, in the future, leverage its advantages in advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes to evolve its “national quantum team” to an international one, with the hope of establishing key supply chain partnerships with democratic partners. To that end, the president said that Taiwan’s quantum technology has moved from basic research to practical application of artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

The president continued that the government will promote balanced technological development in Taiwan through talent cultivation. This includes establishing national computing data and data centers, with a stable power supply provided. The Cabinet’s plan has multiple goals, he said, including assisting SMEs in smart tech development, establishing an AI-era lifestyle ecosystem, and improving the overall innovative, entrepreneurial, and economic ecosystem for Taiwan. 

Lai noted that under the first phase of the quantum technology plan, achieved during his predecessor’s term, Taiwan acquired the capability to manufacture its own quantum chips and computers. Now he will support the second phase, providing a solid backing for the industry.

The NSTC announced four major strategies, including launching a verification platform and establishing the HPQC computing center in northern Taiwan, developing the industrial supply chain, and inviting international cooperation to jointly develop software and systems. NSTC Chairman Wu Cheng-wen (吳誠文) added that Taiwan will leverage its supply chain strength to enter the global quantum ecosystem.
