Guam Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero is leading a delegation to Taiwan for one week to deepen cooperation in areas including smart agriculture and healthcare. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) hosted a banquet for the delegation this Monday, discussing views on tourism, medical referrals, and cultural exchanges.
The foreign minister stated that Taiwan and Guam share Austronesian cultural heritage and are democratic partners in safeguarding regional peace and stability. He said tourism, educational, and agricultural exchanges with the United States territory have become increasingly close over the past few years, while people-to-people exchanges have also flourished.
In her remarks, Leon Guerrero noted that the delegation’s visit led to the establishment of a sister city relationship with Kaohsiung City. She said she hopes to further consolidate bilateral friendship through city diplomacy. Guam’s government is committed to expanding medical cooperation with Taiwan, she stated, hoping to improve the quality of Guam’s medical care through exchanges of medical education and professional medical personnel. She said the territory also looks forward to establishing deeper connections relating to Indigenous culture and tourism.
The Foreign Ministry echoed Leon Guerrero’s hopes, and emphasized that future cooperation will jointly promote economic prosperity and improve the well-being of people from both Guam and Taiwan.
