A United States Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft transited the Taiwan Strait in international airspace this Wednesday. The U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet said this “demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Reuters reported that the 7th Fleet’s statement read, “By operating within the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law, the United States upholds the navigational rights and freedoms of all nations.”

The flight comes ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned visit to China later this month, with Washington and Beijing looking to stabilize ties after prolonged disputes regarding trade, technology, and Taiwan.
