FedEx has expanded its existing cargo hub at Taoyuan International Airport, doubling its size to 19,000 square meters. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) attended the opening ceremony this Wednesday, likening the expansion to the company’s vote of confidence in Taiwan.
FedEx packages arrive at the first-floor import customs area and are sorted by Taiwan’s most advanced automated system. The system is capable of handling 9,000 packages per hour, increasing import efficiency by 2.5 times and export efficiency by 1.2 times.
Vice President Hsiao said FedEx has been deeply rooted in Taiwan since 1990 and continues to expand. She said this investment is the largest one FedEx has made in Taiwan to date, and that the United States company recognizes potential, casting a vote of confidence in Taiwan.
Hsiao said, “We hope that trade between Taiwan and the U.S. will continue to expand in the future, especially given Taiwan’s role as a key global industrial development and technology hub.”
The vice president noted that Taiwan has already secured the U.S. Section 232 most-favored nation treatment and best offer under the Taiwan-U.S. agreement on reciprocal trade (ART). She said Taiwan’s government is responsible for ensuring a strong infrastructure that will make it smoother and more stable for businesses worldwide expanding into the Taiwanese market.
American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Deputy Director Karin M. Lang said FedEx’s new expansion highlights Taiwan’s reliable status as a global trade and supply chain hub. She noted that the investment comes at a crucial time as trade and freight volume between Taiwan and the U.S. is expected to increase under the ART.
