Taiwan’s Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) met with St. Kitts and Nevis Public Works and Environment Ministers last week, aiming to achieve substantial results at the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The two sides hope to establish a technical working group to plan cooperation on renewable energy, carbon credits, and other areas.

Taiwan’s Environment Ministry stated that the technical working group will be coordinated by Taiwan's Foreign Ministry. Peng pointed out that the two countries have a deep friendship and share common goals in environmental protection. He said that they can actively explore signing a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation, with the goal of completing preliminary negotiations by the end of 2026.

St. Kitts and Nevis Environment Minister Joyelle Clarke expressed her hope to deepen the bilateral sustainable partnership, underscoring that St. Kitts and Nevis' current policy focuses on six key areas: energy, water resources, food security, sustainable resettlement, sustainable industries, and the circular economy. Regarding substantive cooperation, she suggested prioritizing the circular economy and critical minerals sectors, with the hope that both sides would strengthen their dialogue, and jointly present tangible cooperative results at COP31.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Public Works Minister Konris Maynard, on behalf of the government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, expressed sincere gratitude to Taiwan for its outstanding cooperation in various fields over the years. Maynard emphasized that thanks to the strong partnership between the two countries, St. Kitts and Nevis has made significant progress in national development and related areas, and looks forward to further deepening bilateral cooperation and experience exchange on the existing solid foundation.
