Taiwan was able to resume its status as African swine fever (ASF)-free due to its expertise, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Tuesday. He made the remarks the day after the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) updated Taiwan’s ASF-status.
The Agriculture Ministry said this makes Taiwan the only country in Asia free of all three major swine diseases: foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever, and ASF.
President Lai took to Facebook, writing that Taiwan was able to pass the rigorous review in such a short time due to its long-accumulated systems and expertise. He said that Taiwan has gradually built up its disease prevention and quarantine capabilities from monitoring to response. These are in line with international standards, the president said, both safeguarding Taiwan’s borders and earning international recognition.
Lai acknowledged the professionalism and perseverance of pig farmers, epidemic prevention personnel, and experts. He also thanked citizens for their understanding and support.
The president said that the government will continue strengthening epidemic prevention resilience and seeking international cooperation opportunities.
