Sports Minister Lee Yang (李洋) told reporters on Thursday, April 9, that he will actively work with the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association on finding a way to organize the 2026 Taiwan Athletics Open. The event was canceled on Wednesday, April 8, with the organizers citing inability to secure funding due to the ongoing budget impasse.

Lee said there are funds available in the ministry’s Sports Development Fund and organizers of international competitions, previously funded from the general government budget, should now shift to it. He said the Taiwan Athletics Open is a ranking-point event and he hoped that its cancellation would not affect Taiwanese athletes’ rights.
