Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) says Taiwan’s armed forces maintain close surveillance of the developments in the waters surrounding Taiwan and the region and will share intelligence with allied nations. This came during an interview at the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday, April 21, following the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning’s transit through the Taiwan Strait on Monday, April 20.

On Monday, the Defense Ministry released surveillance photos of the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning (CV-16) steaming through the Taiwan Strait. The images show several carrier-based fighter jets and helicopters on the vessel's flight deck.

Liaoning made its transit on the first day of the joint U.S.-Philippine Balikatan military drills. Over 17,000 troops from seven countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France and Japan will take part in the 19-day exercise.
