A fleet of Chinese warships, including Luyang II destroyers and Jiangkai II frigates, entered the waters southwest of Taiwan’s outlying Penghu Islands on Monday, April 28. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry released photos of the incursion on Monday night and said the navy and air force maintained close surveillance and responded appropriately.

China regularly sends navy and Coast Guard vessels into waters surrounding Taiwan’s outlying islands as well as aircraft and drone sorties that cross the Taiwan Strait median line and enter Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), which is used for defensive purposes but is not sovereign airspace.
