U.S. President Donald Trump says he will discuss the issue of future U.S. arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) during his upcoming visit to China. That came during a meeting with the press at the White House on Monday, May 11.

According to the press agency AFP, Trump was asked whether the U.S. should continue to sell weapons to Taiwan. He did not answer the question directly, but said he will discuss the issue with Xi Jinping.

Trump also downplayed the possibility of China attempting to seize Taiwan by force, saying he has a very good relationship with Xi. He said that the United States is very far away from Taiwan, while China is geographically close. Trump added that Japan and other countries in the region provide support for Taiwan.

Trump is scheduled to arrive in China on Wednesday, May 13, with a discussion agenda expected to include Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, nuclear weapons and rare earth minerals.
