The Foreign Ministry says that China is the sole risk to regional peace and stability at present. That statement came on Thursday, May 14, in response to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) remarks on Taiwan during his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to media reports, Xi told Trump that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. He warned that if it is not handled properly, it could lead to clashes and even conflicts between the two countries.

In response, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that China continuously engages in gray-zone provocations and military threats in the East China Sea, South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait and the waters surrounding Taiwan. It added that China is the sole risk to regional peace and stability at present.

U.S. State Secretary Marco Rubio said during an interview in Beijing on Thursday that U.S. policy towards Taiwan remains unchanged and that altering the status quo would be harmful to both the United States and China.
