Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) reiterated his call for the WHO not to bow to political interference, as Taiwan has proven itself an indispensable member of the global health system. In a Monday, May 18, Facebook post, Lin stated that he and Health Minister Chung-Liang Shih (石崇良) are attending various events while they are in Geneva, pointing out that many international friends and representatives have expressed their amazement and support for Taiwan's creative approach to securing international participation.
The Taiwan Smart Medical & HealthTech Expo was held in Geneva for the first time during the 79th World Health Assembly. Lin stated in his post that the exhibition brought together Taiwan's top medical institutions and companies, showcasing the strength of its national medical professionals in areas ranging from smart and innovative care to healthcare resilience.
Lin pointed out that Taiwan is applying its globally leading chip and AI technological advantages to disease prevention, upgrading medical services, and the health industry supply chain. He also stated that since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Taiwan has continuously invested over US$150 million to stand with the Ukrainian people in training 250 medical professionals and assisting 3,000 amputees and their families in rebuilding their physical, mental, and daily lives. This echoes Taiwan's demonstration of its smart healthcare capabilities and humanitarian spirit.
After arriving on Sunday, Lin became the first Taiwan foreign minister to visit Geneva during the WHA. He said, "The WHO 'leaves no one behind,' yet it constantly violates this motto. What we want to show is that even though Taiwan isn’t able to join the WHO or participate in the Assembly, we are still contributing."
