Two earthquakes above a magnitude 4 struck off the coast of Taitung County on Wednesday morning, May 20, at 9:11 AM. There are no reports of severe damage, but the Central Weather Administration (CWA) reminds the public to be prepared as the area is prone to shaking.

The CWA’s earthquake monitoring system reports that a 4.8 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Taitung County, followed by a 4.1 magnitude quake a few minutes later. Both tremors were about 65 kilometers north-northeast of the county, at a depth of 27.8 and 25.6 kilometers. The maximum intensity of each was felt in Taitung County, at 4 and 3, respectively, on Taiwan’s intensity scale, and was also felt in Hualien, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Changhua at lower intensities, with the stronger quake felt as far away as Kaohsiung and Taichung.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there are no reports of earthquake-related injuries or damage, but the CWA reminds the public that the Hualien-Taitung areas are prone to earthquakes. Citizens should be vigilant and prepared in case of shaking.
