The Taipei City Government unveiled public artwork Monday at the former site of a breakfast meeting that the city said helped shape Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. The unveiling ceremony was attended by distinguished guests from Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, including former TSMC Vice Chairman Tseng Fan-cheng (曾繁城) and former UMC Vice Chairman Liu Ying-ta (劉英達).

The meeting at a former snack shop on Nanyang Street in February 1974, brought together former Economics Minister Sun Yun-suan (孫運璿), local elites and overseas scholar Pan Wen-yuan (潘文淵), which the city said helped lay the foundation for Taiwan’s integrated-circuit technology industry.

Speaking at the ceremony, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said the site represented “the starting point for decision-making in the country’s industrial transformation.” He cited Sun’s words to young engineers sent to the United States to bring back technology: “This mission must succeed; failure is not allowed.”

The artwork, titled “From the Table to the World,” is related to its broader “Taipei Technology Corridor” plan, which links technology parks in Beitou-Shilin, Neihu and Nangang districts. The project also reflects the goal of developing Taipei into a global “AI PowerHouse,” the city said.
