President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) presented the visiting Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil with the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon in recognition of his long-standing support of Taiwan, contributions to Taiwan-Czech relations, and defense of global democracy. Lai met with Vystrčil and the Czech delegation he is leading on Tuesday, June 2.

Lai said that both Taiwan and Czechia have endured long periods of authoritarian rule. This made them understand that freedom is hard-won and unite to defend it. He expressed hope that both sides will continue to work together to show the international community that they stand on the side of democracy and freedom in the face of authoritarian expansion. Lai also noted that Taiwan and the Czech Republic continue to deepen their partnership across various fields, including trade, technology, culture, and education.

Vystrčil said that people in Taiwan, like in Czechia, take note of the changes in international order, where the rule of law and fundamental freedoms seem to be taking a step back, while the importance of power is coming to the fore. He said it is, therefore, a shared responsibility to resist these trends, enhance national resilience, and safeguard freedom and democracy. He added that was precisely the reason the Czech Republic needs allies and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit Taiwan.
