On Monday afternoon, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Taiwan is not under threat of a tsunami triggered by the 7.8 earthquake in the Philippines earlier in the morning. This is an amendment to their earlier warnings, which were based on estimates that the earthquake was magnitude 8.2. With the updated information, Taiwan is no longer in the affected area, and waves are expected to be under 30cm, below the level required for a tsunami warning. The CWA will continue to monitor the situation and deliver updates as necessary.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also noted that the threat of a tsunami for the greater area passed about 5 hours after the quake.

At approximately 7:40 a.m. a 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao Island in the Philippines at a depth of 10km. Initial reports say 15 people are dead and nearly 130 are injured – mostly from falling debris. Local authorities are still investigating the full extent of the damage.

Taiwan’s Tourism Administration confirmed that no Taiwanese travel groups were affected by the quake.
