A suspected gas explosion at a residential building in Hsinchu left two dead and two injured on Tuesday, June 9. According to preliminary assessments, the incident also affected eight other households and a total of 18 residents.
A 65-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman were transported to a hospital in critical condition and eventually pronounced dead. Two men, aged 60 and 33, were hospitalized.
Hsinchu Mayor Ann Kao (高虹安) said that the city government has established a communication mechanism through neighborhood chiefs, district offices, and relevant departments to individually verify the needs of affected residents and provide full assistance with relocation and recovery efforts.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), and former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) both expressed their condolences on social media and thanked frontline rescue workers for their efforts. Lai said he has instructed relevant central government agencies and local authorities to assist affected residents.
