Beijing is using maritime law enforcement as a cover for expansion, and its actions not only undermine the status quo but also aim to create a ‘new normal’ in the region. That came from Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Wednesday, June 10, in response to China launching a special maritime law enforcement operation in the waters east of Taiwan.

Chinese Coast Guard vessels have reportedly been harassing foreign merchant ships transiting through Taiwan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between Sunday and Tuesday. Foreign Ministry condemned these actions and said they infringe upon Taiwan’s sovereign rights.

Lin said during an interview at the Legislature that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other, and the Chinese Communist Party has no right to interfere with Taiwan’s sovereignty or jurisdiction over the waters off its east coast. He said the CCP’s expansion is no longer merely about disrupting the status quo but rather aims to create a ‘new normal.’ Lin added that Taiwan will work with like-minded nations to address this and called on the international community to help contain Beijing’s military expansions.

Lin also addressed the Japan-Philippines negotiations over their maritime boundaries, which Beijing used as a pretext to launch its special law enforcement operation. He said both countries have maintained communication with Taipei and that Taiwan’s interests and fishing rights will not be affected.
