The United States House Committee on Appropriations has included US$1 billion for the Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative (TSCI) and another US$1 billion for replacing defense equipment provided to Taiwan in its 2027 fiscal year defense appropriations bill, released Wednesday, June 10. The committee announced that its defense subcommittee will review the bill this Thursday.

The committee stated that its defense appropriations will amount to US$1.072 trillion in discretionary funding. They say this is aimed at enhancing national strategic military advantage, strengthening support for military personnel and their families, optimizing Department of Defense operations, combating transnational drug trafficking, and delivering on the current administration’s priorities.

Under the bill, US$1 billion will be allocated under a section dedicated to inter-service operations and sustainment to replace and compensate for defense materials and services provided to Taiwan.

The bill stipulates that the secretary of defense would be authorized to provide assistance to Taiwan through TSCI funds. This includes military education, training, and procuring defense articles and services.

The bill awaits approval from the House, Senate, and president.
