Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said the newly-opened Taiwan Friendship Building in Ukraine symbolizes both the solidarity and friendship between the two peoples, as well as the concrete results of Taiwan’s support. The foreign minister witnessed the unveiling ceremony at the UNBROKEN Ecosystem online on Thursday, June 11.

The building is a center for comprehensive rehabilitation and medical services, designed for war victims and capable of treating 27,000 patients annually, and is part of a larger effort by Taiwan to support Ukraine’s reconstruction. In 2024, the Foreign Ministry assisted the city of Lviv in rebuilding its UNBROKEN Ecosystem medical park. The building was named to honor Taiwan’s contributions, with the opening attended by local officials, including Lviv Mayor Ivanovych Sadovyi.

During his remarks at the ceremony, Sadovyi thanked Taiwan for its continued support during the war. He said that the new building symbolizes the determination of two peoples who pursue hope and reconstruction, describing Taiwan’s unwavering support with the phrase, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

In a Friday press release, Lin stated that since Russia’s invasion, the Ukrainian people have demonstrated their firm resilience to uphold and strive for the values of freedom and democracy. Taiwan, he said, understands the struggle as another country looking down the barrel of authoritarian aggression. He continued that medical care has always been a key part of Taiwan’s outreach in the region. Lin said Taiwan will continue to work with international partners to support Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery.
