The San Francisco Asian Art Museum's special exhibition of costumes by Nymphia Wind has garnered significant attention. Attendees told local media that Wind's work has brought to the forefront a unique aspect of Taiwanese culture that is rarely seen by the general American public.

The 2024 RuPaul's Drag Race winner herself appeared at the June 11 ribbon-cutting ceremony and symposium, but due to overwhelming demand, the museum has added more artist-talk sessions. Born in the United States and raised in Taiwan, Wind said she discovered a deeper interest in Taiwanese culture, revealing that she is currently immersed in aboriginal handicrafts.

Wind expressed her desire to give a voice to Taiwan, pointing out how the country cannot participate in the UN, or as 'Taiwan' in the Olympics. Instead it must compete under the name 'Chinese Taipei.' She said that, especially as a public figure, she thinks it's very important to clearly express that she is Taiwanese and to affirm her Taiwanese identity.

The exhibit showcases three iconic garments designed and interpreted by the Taiwanese drag queen: her classic banana dress, the off-white gown she wore when receiving her crown – adorned with Taiwanese elements such as clouded leopards and pheasants – and a purple opera-inspired costume.

The dresses will remain on view from Friday, June 12, through Sunday, June 14, in the Shriram Experiential Learning Center during museum hours.
