WATCH: Chinese whistleblower's fraud allegations shake elite universities

A former doctoral student has triggered a wave of academic misconduct investigations across some of China’s most prestigious universities, exposing what critics say are deeper problems within the country’s research system.

Known online as "Student Geng," (耿同學) or Geng Jiang-tao (耿江濤), the former Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics PhD candidate has publicly accused several prominent Chinese scholars of publishing papers containing duplicated images, manipulated data and improperly edited figures in journals published by Nature and its affiliated publications.

Chinese universities later confirmed a number of the allegations. Several senior academics were removed from leadership positions.

Geng says he possesses further evidence involving additional high-profile researchers and has warned that more cases could be revealed. However, in late May, he announced a suspension of his investigations, saying the scale of misconduct had become overwhelming. He later revealed that his Douyin account, the Chinese version of TikTok, where he shared many of his findings, had been permanently restricted, while citing concerns about pressure and his family’s safety.

Despite those setbacks, Geng has attracted more than 1.8 million followers and even attention from Chinese state media.

Observers say the controversy extends beyond individual cases of misconduct. China’s research system places heavy emphasis on publication counts, journal rankings and grant funding when determining promotions, academic titles and administrative appointments.

Critics argue that those incentives have created intense pressure on researchers and contributed to a culture in which academic performance metrics can outweigh research integrity.
