Internationally acclaimed pianist Chen Rui-bin (陳瑞斌) will perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1 on Saturday, June 20, at Aula Simfonia Jakarta, joining the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra as part of his Southeast Asia tour. The Jakarta concert follows a widely praised appearance in Singapore, drawing significant attention across the region. 

Raised in Vienna, Chen is known for his strong foundation in the Austro-German musical tradition. His interpretation emphasizes both structural quality and emotional depth, closely aligning with Brahms’ musical language. Critics have described his playing as technically commanding yet philosophically nuanced, prioritizing organic musical flow and tonal refinement over showmanship.

Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, composed during the composer’s youth, is considered a landmark work that merges symphonic scale with concerto form. Chen approaches this piece as more than a mere showcase for virtuosity; he highlights its psychological tension and humanistic spirit, shaped by his deep immersion in Viennese musical culture.

Chen’s recent performances have gained attention from both regional and international media, including Lianhe Zaobao and The Financial Times. Notable publications such as The Star, Die Zeit, and Wiener Zeitung also praised his performance. Following his performance in Jakarta, Chen will continue his tour of Asia, with plans for a major U.S. tour next year.
