The Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecast that a tropical depression has formed near Guam and is expected to strengthen into Typhoon Mekkhala as early as tomorrow, approaching Taiwan on June 25 and 26.
CWA forecaster Liu Pei-teng (劉沛滕) stated that due to gradually strengthening Pacific high pressure, the weather will be stable across Taiwan until June 24, with only scattered and brief showers in some mountainous areas.
High temperatures in western Taiwan will reach 33 to 35 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of localized highs of 36 degrees. High temperatures in eastern Taiwan will generally be around 33 to 34 degrees Celsius, while Taitung may also experience highs of 36 degrees.
Liu reports that Mekkhala is expected to approach Taiwan on June 25 or 26, bringing rainfall to Taiwan. Southern Taiwan may experience brief, localized showers or thunderstorms, while other areas will see afternoon thunderstorms.
However, Liu pointed out that the future path of Mekkhala will depend on the strength of the Pacific high-pressure system. The typhoon may move east of the Philippines and then turn north, reaching the waters south of the Okinawa Islands. If its northward turn brings it closer to Taiwan, it will approach Taiwan even more directly.
Regardless of the exact path, Liu warned that long waves will reach Taiwan’s coastal areas, including the northern coast of Keelung, the eastern half of Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula, starting June 23.
