The DPP caucus has urged the KMT to use Legislative Speaker Daniel Han's (韓國瑜) U.S. visit to show whether it backs the Taiwan government’s domestic drone procurement plan.

Han, who heads the opposition-controlled Legislature, left on a pre-planned trip to the United States on Sunday, leading a cross-party delegation of lawmakers. This was three days after the DPP-led Cabinet proposed a NT$210 billion (US$6.6 billion) unmanned-vehicle procurement bill aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s asymmetric defense capabilities, a goal bipartisan U.S. lawmakers have repeatedly urged in recent months.

DPP caucus whip Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌) said at a press conference in Taipei on Monday, June 22, that the opposition’s cuts to drone-related funding in an earlier government-proposed special defense act had “to some degree harmed Taiwan-U.S. ties.”

Tsai said the KMT should use the U.S. visit to explain its stance on the special act, which was proposed by the Cabinet on Thursday, June 18. The bill seeks to procure 1,446 surveillance drones, 208,200 attack drones, and 1,320 small suicide unmanned boats between August 1, 2026, and December 31, 2031.
