Carrefour in Taiwan is rebranding its hypermarkets to “Prosperity Plaza” and supermarkets to “Uni-Prosperity” following the grocery store chain’s exit from the French Carrefour system. This leaves Costco as the only foreign brand among Taiwan’s hypermarkets.
The chain told CNA that “Carrefour” can only be used until this Tuesday, June 30, when its brand licensing agreement with the French headquarters expires. Beginning this Wednesday, July 1, they are only allowed to use the new names.
Market analysts point out that hypermarkets in Taiwan have been undergoing continuous consolidation and reshuffling in recent years. PX Mart, Taiwan’s largest supermarket chain, acquired RT-Mart in 2022 and completed brand integration in 2025, rebranding the stores to “MEGA PX MART.” This also leaves Costco, a membership-only club retail store, as the only foreign brand in Taiwan.
Uni-President Enterprises Corporation Chair Lo Chih-hsien (羅智先) says changes in population structure, with about one-third of households in Taiwan now being one-person households, have had a significant impact on large hypermarkets. Lo says closing stores is not necessarily a bad thing, instead allowing teams to focus more on operations.
While the MEGA PX MART Zhonglun location in Taipei is slated to close its doors this September and the A.mart Zhongxiao location closed last September, Costco has continued expanding across Taiwan. Costco’s Kaohsiung store, which has been in operation for nearly 30 years, will relocate next Friday, becoming the largest Costco location in Taiwan.
