As Typhoon Bavi closes in on Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said on Thursday, July 9, that it will issue a maritime typhoon warning at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and a land typhoon warning in the early hours on Friday, July 10. The most severe impact of the typhoon is still expected to be between Friday evening through Saturday, July 11, with wind and rain conditions not improving before Sunday.

As of 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, the center of Typhoon Bavi was located around 1,000 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan’s southern tip, continuing on a northwesterly track. The latest estimates place the typhoon’s predicted path farther away from Taiwan’s landmass than previous forecasts.

CWA predicts waves of two to four meters along all of Taiwan’s coasts by the evening of July 10, with six meter waves possible along the eastern and northern coasts. Strong gusts of wind, registering 8 to 10 on the Beaufort scale are likely along all coastal areas during the day on July 10. The most intense winds are expected from the evening of July 10 through the daytime on July 11, gusting 10 to 11 on the Beaufort scale, in coastal areas, particularly north of Taoyuan, yin Yilan, Matsu, Orchid Island, and Green Island, where gusts of 12 on the Beaufort scale are possible.

Heavy rainfall is expected in northern mountain areas starting during daytime on Friday, July 10, and across Taiwan from that evening. Rain is forecast to ease gradually on Saturday evening.
