RTI Chair: Chinese-language media’s biggest challenge is China’s influence

The biggest challenge for global Chinese-language media is China’s influence. That was the word from Radio Taiwan International Chairperson Cheryl Lai. She was speaking at the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Chinese Language Media Summit on Tuesday.

Lai says global media is facing a major obstacle. China is spending an enormous budget on buying many media channels and time slots around the world. Lai says Beijing is also using disinformation to distort the truth.

Texas Chinese Radio Program Director Pamela Hu says when she heard RTI programs on the local media, all the key content that was unfriendly to China was deleted. Lai says this type of misinformation is probably very common.

Nearly 200 overseas and domestic industry leaders are meeting at the two-day conference in Taipei to discuss new trends in the media. The ceremony for the Chinese Language Journalism Awards for Overseas Media will be on Wednesday to honor outstanding work in Chinese-language journalism around the world.
