New Taipei District Court on Tuesday, August 11, sentenced Chinese immigrant Xu Chunying (徐春鶯) to seven years in prison for conspiring with the Chinese government officials to interfere in Taiwanese politics and other crimes. She was found to have violated the Anti-Infiltration Act, the Banking Act, and committed fraud under the Criminal Code.

According to the New Taipei District Court’s press release, Xu came to Taiwan in 1998, where she obtained residency through marriage. She later sat on the boards of directors of the Taiwan New Immigrant Development Association and the “Chinese Cross-Strait Marriage Alliance.” She frequently traveled to China to attend events under the pretext of serving Chinese spouses’ affairs. Xu subsequently acted on instructions from the Chinese government and campaigned in support of Vivian Huang (黃珊珊) in the 2022 Taipei mayoral election and the then-Taiwan People’s Party chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) in the 2024 presidential elections. She continuously reported back to her Chinese handlers on Taiwan’s electoral and political situation.

Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) said on Wednesday, August 12, that because Xu poses a risk to national security and social stability, the government can, in accordance with the law, revoke her residency. She also noted that because Xu committed her crimes in Taiwan, she must also serve her sentence in the country.
