Charter flight from India unites and separates transnational families

A charter flight bringing Taiwanese citizens and some foreigners back from New Delhi on Tuesday has left some transnational families with difficult choices.

The flight was the latest effort by the foreign ministry to repatriate those who wish to return to Taiwan amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as travel has become difficult.

Some, such as Indian citizen Shail Shakunt jumped at the opportunity to get to Taiwan. His Taiwanese wife had just given birth to twins in Taipei, and since her family lives elsewhere in Taiwan, she has been alone with her newborns. Shakunt applied for and received a visa from Taiwan’s representative office in India. He then traveled 23 hours from Gujarat to catch the charter flight to Taiwan.

Indian businessman Prabhat Ranjan had to make a different decision. Since he was unable to leave his work, he decided he would send his Taiwanese wife and his son from the city of Noida in Uttar Pradesh to catch the charter flight while he stayed behind. He says he believes that given Taiwan’s successful response to COVID-19, Taiwan is the safest place to be.
