Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) received a delegation of lawmakers from the Japan Innovation Party and expressed hope that both sides will continue working together to realize the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, alongside deepening cooperation in areas like industry and economic security. That came in a Foreign Ministry press release on Tuesday, September 8.
Lin received a delegation of Diet members from the Japan Innovation Party on Monday. He said that the party has long been an important friend of Taiwan, not only supporting the development of Taiwan-Japan relations, but also offering assistance after the 2018 and 2024 earthquakes in Hualien.
Lin thanked the party for its long-term attention to the issues of Taiwan Strait stability, Indo-Pacific regional security, and bolstering Japan’s own defensive capabilities.
The foreign minister noted that amid the rapid restructuring of global supply chains, Taiwan and Japan possess highly complementary industrial strengths. Japan is actively developing 17 strategic growth sectors, while Taiwan continues to strengthen its position in high-tech strategic industries. Lin said that both sides could further deepen cooperation in fields like AI, semiconductors, aerospace, energy, societal resilience, and economic security. Using their respective strengths, Taiwan and Japan are able to jointly build a secure, trustworthy, and resilient non-red supply chain using their respective strengths.
Japanese House of Representatives member Noboyuki Baba expressed gratitude for the sincere condolences and generous donations from the Taiwan government and people following the Kumamoto earthquake in July. He said that this affirms the genuine friendship between Taiwan and Japan.
Baba also expressed agreement with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi past statement that “a Taiwan contingency is a Japanese contingency.” He added that in the face of an increasingly tense regional security situation and shared challenges such as energy, Taiwan and Japan should deepen security cooperation.
