A Japanese lawmaker has called for Taiwan and Japan to become allies. House of Councillors member Hei Seki said the two countries face a common threat from China, which he described as “an extremely vicious communist regime.”
“The truly ideal alliance relationship is the United States, Taiwan, and Japan. We should form an iron-triangle alliance,” he said.
Seki made the remarks at a Taiwan-Japan diplomacy and defense forum in Taipei on Wednesday, September 9. Organized by the Indo-Pacific Strategy Thinktank (IPST), the forum also featured addresses by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), Japanese lawmaker Haruo Kitamura and IPST executive director Akio Yaita.
“Japan and Taiwan face the same threat. As long as this Chinese Communist Party regime exists, it will always be a threat to us,” he said.
Seki argued that a Chinese annexation of Taiwan would mean that Japan’s security and national defense would also “fundamentally collapse” and that “strength” was the only way to deter China.
Seki, a China-born naturalized Japanese citizen and member of the Japan Innovation Party who was elected to the House of Councillors in 2025, also called for Japan to establish a “Taiwan Relations Act” to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan in all areas.
