The military police unit guarding the Central Bank's Wulai vault has been exposed for running an illegal online gambling ring. The Defense Ministry’s Military Police Command stated that those suspected of being involved have been immediately removed from their positions and will face criminal and disciplinary action. The case has been transferred to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
According to media reports, several soldiers from the 601st Battalion of the 205th Military Police Command are suspected of drafting fellow recruits to participate in online gambling within the barracks, with some even incurring debts as a result. Soldiers were suspected of using messaging apps to settle accounts and paying in cash.
The Military Police Command emphasized that it will handle the few unscrupulous soldiers who break the law, and will continue to strengthen internal management, enforce mobile phone usage regulations, and enhance military discipline education to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The Wulai Vault, officially known as the Wenyuan Vault, is the heavily fortified subterranean bunker where the Central Bank of Taiwan stores virtually all of Taiwan's national gold reserves. The 424 metric tons of gold constitute the vast majority of national gold reserves, valued at approximately NT$1.7 trillion (over US$ 53.7 billion). The Central Bank issued an official press release confirming that the gold reserves remain fully secured and entirely unaffected.
