Olympic pommel horse silver medalist Lee Chih-kai (李智凱) and Olympic horizontal bar bronze medalist Tang Chia-hung (唐嘉鴻) are leading Taiwan’s men’s gymnastics team at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan. Parallel bars specialist Hung Yuan-hsi (洪源禧) will join the team; all three are highly anticipated medal contenders.
Taiwan’s men’s gymnastics team won the team bronze medal at the last Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, while Japan came in second, and China came in first. Head coach Lin Yu-hsin (林育信) says excellent teamwork is needed for the team to score well in all six events and surpass South Korea, the last Games’ fourth-place team.
Taiwan’s women’s gymnastics team also has the chance to medal, says head coach Tsai Heng-cheng (蔡恆政). Three of the five female athletes previously competed in the last Asian Games. Tsai says the team is aiming for a fourth-place team finish and bronze in individual events, as seen in the previous Games when Taiwan placed behind China, Japan, and North Korea, and Ting Hua-tien (丁華恬) won bronze on the balance beam.
Coaches say the Asian Games 2026 are an important test of Taiwan’s gymnastics strength in the new cycle. The teams will move on to the World Championships and strive for Olympic qualification around two weeks after the Asian Games. A good performance in Nagoya could open the door for the athletes to Los Angeles 2028.
The Asian Games will begin September 19, with a total of 482 Taiwanese athletes competing in 34 sports.
