U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview that a certain Taiwanese chip company is investing US$500 billion in the United States. Analysts believe that the company in question may be TSMC, which according to recent reports is mulling establishing a facility in Texas, on a scale comparable to its previous, US$265 billion investment in Arizona.
In an interview with TIME magazine, Trump stated that a “great Taiwanese chip company” is making a US$500 billion investment in the United States. He also said that the momentum behind U.S. economic growth comes not only from artificial intelligence, but also from investment in the automotive, pharmaceutical, and technology industries.
Analyst Weng Wei-jie (翁偉捷) said that the Trump administration continues to push for chip manufacturing to return to the U.S., and TSMC plays a vital role in this effort. He noted that beyond building fabs locally, TSMC has also attracted supply chain partners to invest in the U.S. The company is effectively replicating Taiwan’s science park model to form a semiconductor industry cluster in the country. Weng believes that Trump brings the issue up to remind Taiwan that the investment must be confirmed before he leaves office.
