In commemoration of Labor Day, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) expressed her appreciation for the hard work of all laborers in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“Thank you for your hard work,” Tsai said, underscoring the pivotal role workers play in Taiwan&39;s resilience in facing challenges is largely due to the dedication of its workforce.
Tsai also highlighted the policies implemented over the past eight years to improve labor conditions. In particular, Tsai pointed out the increase in the monthly minimum wage over the past eight years, which rose from NT$20,008 (US$613) in 2016 to NT$27,470 (US$842) this year. Hourly wages also increased from NT$120 (US$4) to NT$183 (US$6) during the same period. She added that the Minimum Wage Act, a comprehensive minimum wage review mechanism, has also been passed, safeguarding the livelihood of grassroots workers.
Moreover, amendments to the Gender Equality in Employment Act have been implemented to curb the incidence of workplace sexual harassment. Revisions include strengthening employer consciousness and accountability, enhancing victim support systems, and instituting an external complaint investigation mechanism.
Tsai assured the government’s continued support for labor rights, including the sustained funding for the labor insurance fund, totaling NT$267 billion (US$8 billion) since 2020. She said this commitment reflects the government's dedication to ensuring the welfare of workers in Taiwan.
